400th Guardian Dog Placed

We’re excited to celebrate a major milestone in our conservation efforts: the placement of our 400th Anatolian Livestock Guardian Dog puppy.

Our sister organization in South Africa recently placed four Anatolian puppies with eager farmers in the Thabazimbi area of Limpopo, a region within South Africa’s free-roaming cheetah range. These young dogs will now bond with their herds and flocks, growing into strong protectors that defend livestock from predators such as cheetahs.

This practical, effective solution helps promote coexistence between predators and people. By reducing livestock losses, guardian dogs lower the need for lethal control and encourage farmers to tolerate predators. This preserves critical habitat for cheetahs and other wildlife.

The puppies were born at Irwin’s Guardian Stud, a key partner in our program. Their care is supported by:

Additional support comes from Ultra Pet, Bravecto South Africa, and Virbac South Africa Farm, who help ensure the dogs remain healthy and parasite-free after placement.

Two students from Toerbroers Kampus joined this latest placement trip, gaining valuable insight into human-wildlife conflict and how livestock guardian dogs can offer real solutions.

The program also benefits from the Ron Magill Conservation Endowment, which provided the field vehicle, and Mitsi Tech Performance Gauteng, who maintain it.
